MIGRATION CONFERENCE TO BE HELD ON NOV 11

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 2 (Bernama) -- Issues of immigration and ethnic relations will be discussed at the Metropolis Asia: Building Migration conference to be opened by Crown Prince of northern state of Perak Raja Dr Nazrin Shah on Nov 11.


Organising Chairperson Prof James Chin said the two-day conference is jointly organised by Metropolis International, Monash University, the Australian Multicultural Foundation and the Chinese Academy of
Social Sciences and hosted by Monash University Sunway campus.

"The conference will examine issues on migration flows, management and governance, urbanisation and its influence on social and economic integration and diasporas and trans-nationalism," he said in a statement here Monday.

Prof Chin, who is Head of the School of Arts and Social Sciences, Sunway Campus, said the participants will be made up of Asian and other scholars seeking to enhance research cooperation, specifically on immigration and ethnic relations.

"The conference seek to understand the effects of the global recession on migration, managing migration flow and urbanisation. It is also to enhance and consolidate the Metropolis network in Asia," he added.

Prof Chin said there were plans to establish a regional secretariat to engage with the Metropolis International Steering Committee and existing secretariats throughout the world.
