S. Korea builds rehabilitation center for Vietnamese war victims

SEOUL, Nov. 2 (Yonhap) -- South Korea has completed the construction of a rehabilitation center for Vietnamese victims still suffering from Agent Orange, a defoliant widely used by the U.S. forces during the Vietnam War, officials said Tuesday.
The facility, funded by South Korea's Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, is located in Vietnam's Quang Nam province, which was hit hardest by the toxic chemicals during the war, they said.
Named the "Korea-Vietnam Peace Village," the rehabilitation center will care for about 80 war veterans or their descendants who are suffering from illnesses after being exposed to Agent Orange, the ministry said in a statement.
South Korea spent 2 billion won (US$1.7 million) over the past year to build the facility, according to the statement.
A ceremony is scheduled at the Vietnamese province on Wednesday to mark the completion of the center with some 150 government representatives and war veterans from the two nations taking part, ministry officials said.
South Korea fought alongside the U.S. in the Vietnam War. But since establishing diplomatic ties in 1992, Seoul and Hanoi have steadily expanded relations to ease their Cold War tensions.
