M'SIAN, AUSTRALIAN POLICE WORKING CLOSELY TO UNCOVER MASTERMINDS IN HEROIN SMUGGLING

SHAH ALAM (Malaysia), Nov 2 (Bernama) -- The Royal Malaysia Police have sought the cooperation of Australian Federal police to track down the masterminds behind a heroin smuggling case involving the two countries, said Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar.

He said the narcotics division was investigating the case with the
Australian police.

"We want to know how this items (drugs) could have come out from the country," he told reporters after attending a Deepavali celebration at the Selangor Police Contingent headquarters near here.

He was commenting on the case where Australian police found 168kgs of heroin inside a shipping container that arrived from Malaysia.

The seizure is the fifth largest drug seizure in Australian history. The drugs were found concealed in a consignment of wooden doors and estimated to have a street value exceeding US$400 million (RM1.25 billion).

On another development, Ismail denied that there was any threat to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during the latter's stay in the country.

"It was just our normal security measures to protect our guests,” he said, responding to whether there was any terrorist threat on the Indian premier.

Manmohan was in the country last week and officially opened the Little India project in Brickfields in Kuala Lumpur near here
