DROP IN SMUGGLING CASES AT THE BORDER - POLICE

TUMPAT (Kelantan, Malaysia), Dec 29 (Bernama) -- Smuggling activities in the border areas has dropped by 616 cases to 3,125 cases between January and Dec 20 this year, from 3,741 cases in the corresponding period last year, Internal Security and Public Order director Khalid Abu Bakar.

He said 4,035 people had been arrested for various smuggling offences this year,
from 2,903 people last year.

Their arrest led to the seizure of RM26 million worth of goods, from RM33
million (US$10.683 million) last year, he told reporters after the opening of a
new pontoon for the Marine Operations Force (MOF) in Pengkalan Kubor here
Wednesday.

He said a total of 1,400 foreigners had been detained for entering the country
illegally this year, adding that last year, 2,390 illegal immigrants were
arrested.

On the construction of the pontoon, he said it was built at a cost of RM1.526
million (US$494,006) for the MOF to moor its speed boats.
