STRANDED TANKER TOWED TO MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN

Merak, Banten, Dec 29 (ANTARA) - The tanker MT Melisa which was stranded since Sunday night had been pulled and brought to the middle of the sea by a tugboat.

"We managed to tow MT Melisa to 500 meters from the Cikuasa coast in Merak," head of the Banten Port Administration Office Thomas Candra said on Wednesday.

He said the tanker belonging to Hari of Jakarta was 50 meters long and towed by a 2,000 hp tugboat with the assistance of barge of PT Timas.

There were 16 men who worked in towing the tanker, including five at the tugboat, 11 at the barge.

The Banten port authorities had no idea of how long the tanker that would be anchored in the middle of the ocean.

"The important thing now is that we had managed to tow the tanker to the middle of the ocean. But we have no idea when its owner will take it as we still had not tried to contact the owner, and the other way around," he said.
