Depiction of Hazrat Abbas (AS) in photos needs permission of leading clerics

TEHRAN, Dec. 30 (MNA) -- The photographer of Iranian film “Mokhtarnameh” must obtain permission from the Islamic clerics if he wants to display the photos he has taken from those scenes in the TV series depicting the face of Hazrat Abbas (AS), brother of Imam Hussein (AS).

“Permission for showcasing the photos depends on approval for TV broadcast of those scenes,” Masud Pakdel told on Wednesday.

He said that if the Iranian TV cannot get approval from the leading Shia clerics for broadcasting the scenes, the photos could not be displayed in an exhibition.

“Mokhtarnameh”, which is about an uprising organized by Mokhtar Saqafi after the events of Ashura, the 10th of Muharram, to take revenge against the killers of Imam Hussein (AS), is currently being broadcast on IRIB’s Channel 1 every Friday.

Director Davud Mirbaqeri and producer Mahmud Fallah have consulted Hojjatoleslam Rasul Jafarian about making the TV series.

According to Shia clerics, the depiction of the faces of Prophet Muhammad (S) and thirteen Muslim saints, namely his daughter Hazrat Fatima (SA) and the twelve imams (AS), is forbidden in any art form.

Although Hazrat Abbas (AS) is not among the fourteen, the decision to show the scenes featuring the relatively unknown actor, Kaveh Fotuhi, has provoked outrage among clerics over the past few weeks.

Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi, Ayatollah Seyyed Mohammad-Ali Alavi Gorgani, Ayatollah Hossein Vahid Khorasani and Ayatollah Hossein Mazaheri raised strong objections to the decision.

“I have heard that they want to screen an actor (playing the role) of Qamar-e Bani Hashem(Hazrat Abbas ) (AS). God forbid that they would make such a blunder. Otherwise, there will be no excuse for what may happen and what we would say,” Ayatollah Hossein Vahid Khorasani, the most formidable opponent of the decision, has previously said.

He threatened to call people to cause a riot during this year’s Tasu’a (December 15) if the face of an actor is depicted as Qamar-e Bani Hashem (AS) in the TV series.

Tasu’a is the ninth day of the lunar month of Muharram and is one day before Ashura, which is the day Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions were martyred.

Shortly afterwards, producer Fallah backtracked on their plan to show the scenes, saying that the face of Hazrat Abbas (AS) will be replaced with a shiny light through special effects.

However, director Mirbaqeri has recently said that using a shiny light instead of the face of Hazrat Abbas (AS) is one of our alternatives.

“Six or seven parts of these scenes remain to be broadcast. We should wait to see in which direction the issue moves,” he said on December 26.

Seventy-two photos by Pakdel are currently on display in an exhibition at the Vahdat Hall in Tehran. However, none of the pictures in the collection refers to a depiction of Hazrat Abbas (AS).
