Thai FM confirms six Thais still missing from New Zealand's quake

BANGKOK, Feb 24 (TNA) - Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya quoted a Thai diplomat in New Zealand as confirming on Thursday (Feb 24) that six Thai people have remained missing after a strong 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Christchurch in New Zealand's South Island on February 22.

Chavanont Intarakomalsut, secretary to the Thai foreign minister, acknowledged that authorities concerned have been looking for the missing Thai nationals in New Zealand.

Regarding the evacuation of Thai nationals, mostly workers, from Tripoli, Libya's capital, Chavanont said in a joint press conference with Sutham Nateethong, Spokesman of the Thai Ministry of Labour, and Jirasak Sukhonthachart, Director-General of the Thai Labour Ministry's Department of Employments, that the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Thai Embassy in Rome, is arranging a ship to pick up some 2,000 Thai workers from Tripoli and bring them to Tunisia, and that the ship will then return to pick up another 2,000 Thai workers from Libya to Rome. The evacuation will start over the next few days.

Chavanont revealed that most job placement firms--which are capable of rescuing their clients--were also evacuating them from Libya and they should be able to handle about 6,000 Thai workers. For the remaining 10,000 Thai workers in Libya, Chavanont said, they will be brought to a temporary, but safe shelter in the South of Libya and the Thai Ministry of Defence will send doctors to take care of them. Besides, a help center for Thai workers overseas will be set up at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the ministry's staff will report latest developments at 11am every day.

Meanwhile, the Royal Thai Police has dispatched identity verification and DNA experts to New Zealand to contribute to the identification of quake victims in Christchurch. (TNA)
