Iran ready to build port facilities in Syria

TEHRAN, Feb.27 (MNA) – Iran`s Navy Commander Habibollah Sayyari said the Islamic Republic is ready to build port facilities in Syria.

Sayyari made the remarks during a visit to Syria, where he and a number of navy officials from the two countries, including his Syrian counterpart General Taleb al-Barri attended a ceremony to welcome two Iranian warships, which docked in Syria on Wednesday after passing through the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean Sea.

Khark along with another Iranian ship, Alvand, docked at the Syria port for the first time since the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979.

The 1,500-ton patrol frigate Alvand is armed with torpedoes and anti-ship missiles, while the larger 33,000-ton supply vessel Khark has 250 crewmembers and can carry three helicopters.

Sayyari said Iran’s navy is ready to help Syria with its maritime construction, adding the Islamic Republic is also ready to cooperate with Syria in campaigns against piracy.
