S. Korea resumes deployment of warship to evacuate Koreans from Libya

SEOUL, March 13 (Yonhap) -- South Korea has ordered its warship in the Mediterranean Sea to leave for Libya in an effort to evacuate the remaining South Korean nationals in the turmoil-torn Middle East country, a Defense Department official said Sunday.
The official said the 4,500-ton destroyer Choi Young "departed from the Mediterranean island of Malta at 2 a.m. Sunday (Korean time) to arrive at the eastern Libyan port of Benghazi the next day to prepare for the evacuation of Korean nationals."
The warship is scheduled to dock at Benghazi at around 5 p.m. on Monday.
It marks the second time the warship, which had been in waters near Somalia for anti-piracy operations, has been deployed for the evacuation of Korean nationals from Libya. On March 4, the Choi Young brought 32 Korean nationals from the port of Tripoli to Malta and has been on standby for a similar operation.
South Korea on Wednesday decided to ban its nationals from traveling to or staying in Libya amid intensifying violence between protesters and government forces there
As of Wednesday, 114 South Koreans are estimated to be left in Libya after hundreds more evacuated the Middle Eastern nation in the past week, the foreign ministry earlier said.
