Khabarovsk Territory ready to help Japan in overcoming calamity

KHABAROVSK, March 13 (Itar-Tass) - The Khabarovsk Territory is ready to render aid to Japan in riding out aftermaths of the dreadful natural calamity, said on Sunday Governor Vyacheslav Shport at a meeting that discussed the situation in connection with the devastating earthquake and breakdowns at the Japanese nuclear power stations.
The governor plans to discuss questions of aid with Japanese
Consul-General in Khabarovsk Tsuguo Takahashi in the near future, reported the press service of the territorial government.
According to the Khabarovsk territorial branch of the Russian Ministry for Emergencies "there is no threat to the region from discharges into air of radioactive substances from the broken-down Japanese nuclear power plants. Contaminated steam clouds that formed in the blast, will not reach the territory even with a sharp change in a wind direction. The distance between the explosion at the plants and the territory is over 1,150 kilometres.
"The situation is fully under control. Examinations of air samples
show that there is no radioactive contamination; all figures are in line with security norms," the governor emphasised.
However, the territory is ready for any development of the situation, noted the regional head. He underlined that the territory has sufficient stockpiles of individual protection means of people. Systems of notification of population have been set up. The territory has imposed the regime of increased radiation monitoring.
