Pursue Partnerships For World-Class Research Projects

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) -- The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) should actively pursue partnerships with leading academic research institutions to undertake world-class research which offer practical solutions to pressing issues.

IIUM president Mohd Sidek Hassan said the partnership should comprise local and international institutions to collaborate on world-class research projects.

He said such a partership would offer practical solutions to current future economic and social issues.

He was speaking at the IIUM Quality Day 2011 theme, 'Achieving Excellence Through Research and Innovation' at the IIUM Campus in Gombak here Thursday.

Mohd Sidek reminded the university's community that IIUM had pledged towards becoming one of the best reseach universities in the country.

"The decision to attain Research University status is not simply to glorify the name of IIUM, but one that will serve a useful purpose to the societies we serve.

"IIUM must resolve to becoming a centre of research-par-excellence by championing invention, innovation," he said.

Mohd Sidek said research and development should be at the forefront of the university's academic progress, supporting its teaching and learning process.

Last year, IIUM received RM11.13 million (US$3.652 million) in research grant from the government, with some of the researches receiving recognition at international-level competitions.

All in all, IIUM has collected 21 gold, 35 silver and 44 bronze medals for its research and development findings.
