Korean Air signs 719.3 bln won deal to buy 2 freighters

By Nam Kwang-sik
SEOUL, March 18 (Yonhap) -- Korean Air Lines Co., South Korea's top carrier, said Friday that it has signed a 719.3 billion won (US$638.5 million) deal to buy two B747-8F cargo planes from U.S. aviation giant Boeing Co.
Korean Air has also decided to upgrade the model of passenger aircrafts to be purchased to the B787-9, a slightly bigger version of the B787-8, to sharpen its competitive edge, the company said in a statement.
The decision was made at the company's board meeting held earlier in the day.
The carrier plans to introduce 10 B787-9 passenger planes from 2016. Korean Air was originally planning to buy B787-8 passenger aircraft from this year.
The B787-9 has about 30 seats more than the B787-8, which can carry up to 250 passengers, Korean Air said.
Meanwhile, Korean Air said it will spend 133.3 billion won to build a marina that will have room for 300 yachts and offer services for recreational boating, off Incheon, a port city 40 kilometers west of Seoul.
