Thailand carefully considers its stance on Libya

BANGKOK, March 23 (TNA) - Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, who supervises security affairs, said that Thailand had to carefully consider its stance on Libya to protect relations with friendly nations.

Suthep said that the cabinet in its weekly meeting on Tuesday only acknowledged the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council to boycott Libya. Thailand will then consider if it should follow the resolutions. He said that in principle Thailand was friendly to every country and it would have to take careful consideration before making any actions that might affect its international relations. Meanwhile, Thai workers who returned from Libya are seeking help.

Boonyong Sommee, a worker in Udon Thani, said that he had returned to Thailand on February 28 but had not received any assistance from the government. He filed his petition for a 15,000-baht aid grant with the provincial employment office on March 3. Although the Labour Ministry insists that workers will receive the grant within four days after filing their documents, the worker from Udon Thani, as well as his 150 colleagues, has not received the sum yet.

Officials said that they were gathering workers’ documents and the distribution of the grant had not been set yet. The worker also complained that employment officials rejected his request for them to follow up the overdue payment of his wage. The sum was overdue for two months and amounts to nearly 50,000 baht. His job placement agency also ignores his complaint. He is in deep troubles for having no money because he was robbed and is now jobless. The man must work at a construction site for a daily wage of 200 baht for his own survival. (TNA)
