Thailand to recruit more conscripts in 2011

BANGKOK, March 23 (TNA) - Thailand is scheduled to begin recruiting new conscripts next month, with a total of over 90,000 draftees needed this year.

Commanding General of Thailand's First Army Area Command, Lieutenant General Udomdej Sitabutr said Wednesday that in areas under his jurisdiction alone, some 23,000 new conscripts are to be recruited this year, about 2,000 more than last year's, as the Kingdom needs more military personnel for national defence and mitigation missions.

The commander revealed he has told military officers concerned that the recruitment of new conscripts in his jurisdiction is to be impartial, transparent and accountable, despite the fact that several Thai celebrities, including popular actors, singers and athletes, are due to apply for the military services.

The recruitment of new conscripts under Thailand's First Army Area Command is set to take place from April 1-10, covering 26 provinces. (TNA)
