Seoul Motor Show opens with emphasis on environment, efficiency

SEOUL, March 31 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's largest ever international auto show kicked off on Thursday with an emphasis on conventional rides but also on new cars that are environmentally friendly and efficient.
The 2011 Seoul Motor Show began its 11-day run with a press day at the Korea International Exhibition Center (KINTEX) in Goyang, just northwest of Seoul. The event will be open to the public from Friday to April 10.
This year's show is the largest in its history, as well as the largest of its kind ever to be held in South Korea, with 139 automakers and auto parts manufacturers from eight countries taking part.
Over 300 cars, including 54 brand-new models, will be displayed, offering a close look into the latest trends and technologies in the global auto industry, according to the event's organizers.
The auto show is co-hosted by the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association (KAMA), the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association and the Korea Auto Industries Cooperatives Association.
Also on display will be 32 environmentally friendly vehicles, or green cars, including the SM3 Z.E., a new compact electric vehicle of Renault Samsung Motor Co., the South Korean unit of French automaker Renault SA, which is scheduled to be launched in late 2012.
The participating automakers will also showcase 22 new cars that will be introduced for the first time to Asian markets.
The show will also offer a rare chance to experience what driving a car will be like in the future as the companies will bring 23 concept cars, many of which are set to be introduced to the market in the near future.
"Under the theme of 'Evolution, Green Revolution on Wheels,' the Seoul Motor Show will offer a one-stop look at what future vehicles will be like with new and concept cars, as well as eco-friendly green cars and the latest trends and technology in the global auto industry on display," an organizing committee for the event said earlier.
Over 1 million spectators are expected to visit this year's event with some 12,000 foreign buyers also coming to the show to check out the latest trends in the global automobile industry and seek possible deals with the participating companies, according to Kwan Young-soo, head of the event's organizing committee and also chairman of KAMA.
The event is expected to lead to the signing of business deals worth some US$1.3 billion, he said.
