PM’s Office Minister says flooding situation in Thai south remains worrying

BANGKOK, March 31 (TNA) - Minister Attached to the Thai Prime Minister’s Office Satit Wongnongtaey, in his capacity as the chair of a government committee for flood-relief operations, acknowledged on Thursday that floods in several areas of Thailand's southern region remained a cause of serious concerns.

Satit said that the current floods remain unpredictable, warning people living in areas at risk to be mindful of, probably, extreme weather conditions and to move immediately to safe grounds.

Satit explained that he has coordinated with the commanding general of Thailand's 4th Army Area Command to send local troops to assist people in several flood-stricken provinces in the South and with Minister of Tourism and Sports to set up an ad hoc tourism coordination center to help visitors to Thailand's eastern Rayong Province--who have already been rescued by boats--to return to their homes.

Satit said that Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva had been receiving text messages from people living in the province's Noppitam District claiming that three villages had remained inaccessible by rescue teams on land due to flooding, and that the situation remained critical as local villagers had been struck in their houses for the last 5-6 days without food. However, authorities are now able to send army troops with food supplies to assist them. Elsewhere, flood-hit Tasala Hospital was forced to evacuate patients to Maharaj Hospital, also in Nakhon Si Thammarat. In Trang, Satit noted that the provincial reservoir’s wall has been damaged by overflowing water; so he has warned people living nearby to remain on alert.

Meanwhile, local authorities have warned people in three hillside villages in the southern Thai region at risk of possible flash floods and mudslides, including Ban Plusomparn in Phuket's Thalang District, Ban Wanglung in Nakhon Si Thammarat’s Promkiri District and Ban Sabua in Surat Thani’s Ban Nasarn District, to immediately evacuate to safe grounds; while those in other flash flood and landslide-prone areas to be ready for immediate evacuation once alerted by the local authorities, as heavy rainstorms were still hitting Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat--although the flooding situation in the Thai South is expected to improve over the next few days.
