Thai-US trees planting held to mark 178th anniversary of diplomatic ties

BANGKOK, March 31 (TNA) - US Ambassador to Thailand Kristie Kenny and Bangkok Governor Mom Ratchawong Sukhumbhand Paripatra commemorated 178 years of diplomatic relations between the United States and Thailand on Thursday by planting trees at a public park in central Bangkok.

At the event, held at the Jatujak Public Park, Ambassador Kenny and Mom Ratchawong Sukhumbhand celebrated the 178 years of cordial relations between Thailand and the United States with personal remarks, followed the by planting of Cassia trees at the “U.S.-Thai Garden” section of the park, during which Ambassador Kenny highlighted as important in helping to promote the green agenda in the Thai capital.

The name of this garden derived from the 175 trees planted three years ago by former U.S. Ambassador to Thailand, Eric G. John, and a late Bangkok governor, Samak Sundaravej, who was then the Thai premier, along with local school students and special guests.

In March of 1833, the United States signed the Treaty of Amity and Commerce with Siam, the former name of Thailand, making the Thai Kingdom the first Asian country the U.S. had formal diplomatic relations with and signaling the beginning of the modernization period for Thailand. (TNA)
