ABOUT MONGOLIA-ESCAP COOPERATION

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, /MONTSAME/ Mongolia gained a membership of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) on December 21, 1961. Mongolia has its permanent representative office to the ESCAP. As of today, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Mongolia to the Kingdom of Thailand L.Dashpurev is working as the permanent representative to the ESCAP.
Since joining the ESCAP, the ESCAP's executive secretaries paid visits to Mongolia in 1964, 1968, 1974, 1982, 1995, 2002 and 2006. The last visit was paid on occasion of the 800th anniversary of the Great Mongolian State. The ESCAP Executive Secretary Mrs. Noeleen Heyzer is going to pay an official visit to Mongolia in April at an invitation of the Mongolia's Minister of Foreign Affairs G.Zandanshatar.
During this visit, a high level policy meeting themed “Difficulties and obstacles faced to landlocked countries of Asia Pacific regions” to be held April 12-14 in UB. It will be chaired by Mrs. Noeleen.
The Mongolian representatives have been partaking in the ESCAP's regular sessions, meetings and consultative meetings. For expressing position of the country and situation, and proposals on the cooperation, the 55th, 56th and 58th session have been attended by the Foreign Ministers; the 57th session--by a cabinet member and head of the cabinet secretariat; the 59th, 60th, 61th 62nd, and 64th sessions--by a sector's ministers; the 63rd session--by the Deputy Premier; the 64th session--by a sector's minister; and 65 and 66th sessions--by the permanent representatives.
Mongolia worked as chairmen of the ESCAP's 45th and 55th sessions, and served as a member of the ESCAP's Leading Bureau in 1980-1983. As of present, Mongolia is serving as a member of the board of the Asia-Pacific Training Center for Information and Communication. In addition to it, Mongolia has been actively cooperating with the ESCAP Institute of Statistics from 1989.
In 2008-2011, Mongolia is attending some projects and measures implemented by the ESCAP. Now, three projects of them are continuing today involving matters on cooperation of Northeast Asia in energy sector, environment, information, communication, and drawing up a master plan of one-window of commerce.
A working group of the ESCAP worked in Mongolia in 2008 in order to help the government of Mongolia to tackle urgent matters for developing the mining sector, and issued a related recommendation.
In conjunction with joining the Asia-Pacific Trade Agreement (APTA), the 36th Standing committees' meeting of the APTA members was held 2010 in Ulaanbaatar. Moreover, Mongolia has received technical assistance from the ESCAP for determining the investment and trade policy based on evidence.
