Shinsegae reports 7.4 pct rise in Q1 operating income

SEOUL, April 12 (Yonhap) -- Shinsegae Co., South Korea's biggest discount-store operator, said Tuesday that its first-quarter operating income rose 7.4 percent from a year earlier as demand for garments and home appliance goods remained firm on an economic recovery.
Operating income reached 263 billion won (US$241 million) in the January-March period, compared with an operating income of 245 billion won a year earlier, it said in a regulatory filing.
Sales surged 15 percent to 4.04 trillion won over the cited period. But the firm did not reveal its first-quarter net profit.
In March alone, its operating income rose 4 percent from a year earlier to 78 billion won, and sales soared 14 percent to 1.28 trillion won, it said.
Shares of Shinsegae finished at 257,500 won on the Seoul bourse, unchanged from the previous session's close.
