One-quarter of overpasses in Seoul to be demolished by 2014

SEOUL, April 14 (Yonhap) -- One quarter of all overpasses in Seoul will be demolished by 2014 in a bid to make travel easier for pedestrians, the municipal government said Thursday.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government said its recent survey found 45 out of the city's 179 overpasses, or 25.1 percent, unnecessary.
"We decided to tear down worn-out overpasses to establish a traffic system centered on pedestrians, not cars," a city official said.
In the first step, 10 pedestrian walkways will be removed within this year after carrying out checks on their conditions and collecting local residents' opinions, he added. Crosswalks will likely be put in place of the destroyed overpasses.
Overpasses started to spring up across the capital in the 1960s as South Korea underwent rapid economic development, but a growing number of them have been demolished in the past several years in a campaign to improve the urban landscape.
