BANK MANDIRI CREDITS UP 30.47 PCT

Jakarta, April 14 (ANTARA) - Credit extension by state-owned Bank Mandiri for the electricity, gas and water sectors in the 2007-2010 period experienced an average increase of 30.47 percent, its vice president Riswinandi said here on Wednesday.

He said that the second bigger increase in the extension of credits happened with the transportation and telecommunications sectors. Credits provided for these sectors rose by about rP7.82 trillion while for the construction sector it rose to Rp1.6 trillion.

"Bank Mandiri will continue to play an active role in the development of the electricity infrastructure as an effort to meet the need for electricity in the country. This is expected to boost national economic growth and improve the quality of the people`s life," Riswinandi said.

Riswinandi who was speaking to the Indonesian International Infrastructure Conference and Exhibition (IIICE) 2011, said that his bank was supporting consistently the development of electricity infrastructure in Indonesia to boost national economic growth.

He said that Indonesia needed an investment of about US$97.1 billion until 2019 to develop a good power infrastructure.

The investment is needed to build power generating projects which needed a fund of about US$70.6 billion, transmission projects US$15 billion and distribution networks US$11.3 billion.

In order to increase investment in this sector, he said, the government needs to provide guarantee for the electricity projects.

It also needs to arrange a good price scheme with government policy relaxation, particularly with regard to regulation on the maximum limit of credit extension for meeting funding need in the energy and power generating sectors.

He said that policy on the supply of coals and gas to power generators in the long run was also needed to ensure power distribution in the country.

He said that in order to support the infrastructure in Indonesia, Bank Mandiri has channeled credits worth Rp33.21 trillion in 2010, higher than it had provided in the previous year which stood at Rp28.4 trillion.
