NORTH SUMATRA CPO EXPORTS UP 74.21 PCT

Medan, N Sumatra, April 14 (ANTARA) - The value of North Sumatra`s fat and vegetable oil exports in the first two months of 2011 increased to US$641.443 million or about 74.21 percent from that in the same period a year earlier.

"This figure is obtained from the North Sumatra office of the Central Board of Statistics (BPS). We predict that foreign exchange obtained from vegetable oil would continue to increase," Laksamana Adiyaksa of the Asian Agri said here on Wednesday.

He said that the increase in the foreign exchange earning from these commodities was generated by the increasing trend of their prices and of their export volumes.

Laksamana who is also treasurer of the Indonesian Palm Oil Business Association (Gapki) said that world demand for crude palm oil (CPO) increased following upward trend of prices of other kinds of vegetable oils and crude oil.

The price of CPO for April shipment in Rotterdam for example was closed at 1,152.50 dollars per metric ton while at the same time the price of CPO at the joint marketing office of PT Perkebunan Nusantara was set at Rp8,482 per kg.

He said that the CPO price was expected to hover above US$1,000 per metric ton and therefore, Gapki hoped oil palm plantations would be increased.
