Samsung sets eyes on Southeast Asian market

SEOUL, April 14 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co. said Thursday that it has introduced a new lineup of products in India, stepping up efforts to make inroads into the Southeast Asian consumer electronics market.
The company held a two-day forum on Wednesday for the first time this year in New Delhi to introduce its latest TVs, tablet computers, smartphones, washers and cameras to local media and buyers, it said.
Samsung's Southeast Asian unit, which is tasked with sales and marketing in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal, expects that the demand for consumer electronics products from the region's 140 million people will be among the fastest-growing in the world. The market is forecast to expand 17 percent annually, Samsung said.
"We will become the first company in the Southeast Asian market to post US$5 billion in revenue and then $10 billion," said Shin Jung-soo, the company's head of the Southeast Asian market unit, without disclosing when the targets will be met.
The tech giant said that it hopes to build on the success in India and advance into its neighboring countries.
The company attributed its popularity in the Indian market to its products that are tailored for the lifestyle there, such as the Solar Guru cell phone that can recharge batteries with solar energy and a refrigerator model with an enlarged storage for vegetables, catering to the region's vegetable-heavy diet.
