Farming household income grows 4.2 pct last year

SEOUL, April 14 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's farming household income increased 4.2 percent in 2010 from a year earlier as higher prices of vegetables and fruits helped boost profits, a report showed Thursday.
According to the report by Statistics Korea, local farming households' income averaged 32.12 million won (US$29,550) last year, up from 30.81 million tallied a year earlier.
Despite a decline in revenues from rice due to its poor harvest, farmers earned more from vegetables and fruits whose sales and profits expanded due to higher market prices, it said.
The report showed that revenues from vegetables jumped 17 percent on-year to 7.25 million won, while those from fruits spiked 23.6 percent to 4.15 million won over the same period.
Expenditure by farming households also expanded amid rising inflation. Their average spending amounted to 27.67 million won last year, up 4.1 percent from a year earlier, the report showed.
Farmers held 372.48 million won worth of assets last year, up 4 percent from a year earlier, while their average debts rose 3.6 percent to 27.21 million won, according to the report.
Meanwhile, fishing households earned an average of 35.70 million won last year, a 5.2 percent hike from a year earlier. Their expenditure rose 6 percent to 28.70 million won over the same period, according to the report.
