Lee, U.S. Sen. Webb discuss Korea-U.S. relations, FTA, N. Korea

SEOUL, April 18 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Myung-bak met with a ranking U.S. senator Monday and discussed the alliance and a free trade agreement between the two countries as well as the security situation on the Korean Peninsulas, the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said.
Sen. Jim Webb (D-Virginia) was in Seoul for a three-day visit through Tuesday for talks with Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan and Trade Minister Kim Jong-hoon.
Webb, who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on East Asian and Pacific Affairs, was a key figure in passing a resolution last December condemning North Korea for shelling the South's border island of Yeonpyeong.
Lee's office said the president appreciated the efforts that Webb made to condemn North Korea for provocations as well as his push to get the free trade deal ratified. Lee asked for Webb's continued cooperation with South Korea, the presidential office said in a release.
Webb said the Korea-U.S. relations are more important than ever, and he would continue to make efforts to strengthen the relations and to put in his best efforts to help the trade deal win legislative approval at an early date, the office said.
