Iran Dismisses PGCC Allegations as Unfounded

TEHRAN , April 19 (FNA)- The Iranian Foreign Ministry lashed out at the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC) for its recent statement against Iran, describing it as unfounded and baseless.
Foreign Ministry Spokesmen Ramin Mehman-Parast said on Monday that Persian Gulf Cooperation Council' statement is aimed at diverting public opinion from the crises in some regional countries.

He refuted as baseless the repeated claims and accusations against Iran in the statement.

"While military forces of some countries are killing defenseless men and women, PGCC claims that Iran interferes in other countries' internal affairs," he said, referring to the statement issued by PGCC foreign ministers on April 17.

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi's letter to the UN Secretary General on the situation in Bahrain reveals Iran's concerns about military moves in that country, Mehman-Parast said.

The level of cooperation between Iran and some regional countries reveals the fact that the PGCC's statement does not manifest all its members' views, he said, noting that some of the members are misusing the name of the council for their own interests.

Iran has excellent ties with its Persian Gulf neighbors which favor mutual respect and good neighborly relations, he said.

Bahraini security forces have been brutally suppressing anti-government protesters. So far, tens of people have been killed, hundreds of people have gone missing and thousands of others have been injured.

Demonstrators in Bahrain have been demanding constitutional reforms as well as an end to the 230-year-old monarchy, with hundreds camping out peacefully in the capital's Pearl Square since February 14.

Yet, tension has grown high after the Saudi military intervention in Bahrain. Bahrain, which hosts the US Navy's fifth fleet, is viewed as a very sensitive and determining factor in the power equations of the region.

To help the Bahraini government crush the anti-government protests, Saudi Arabia has deployed over 1,000 troops in the country.
