Electricity Ministry: Turkey’s approval on increasing Euphrates level will help produce 400mw of power

Baghdad (NINA) – Ministry of Electricity renewed its efforts to reach an agreement with Syria and Turkey to increase the water levels in the Euphrates, which comes from these two countries into Iraq. Iraq counts greatly on this river in agriculture and power generating.

Spokesman of the Ministry of Electricity, Musaab Al Mudarris, said in press statement that “Turkey approved, basically, on increasing the water levels in the river to allow Iraq reactivating Haditha Power Station which produces 400mw.”

He added “the agreement due to be done in two months could be part of a bigger agreement with Turkey to import 200mw of electricity.”

Water levels in Euphrates went very low in the last years because the rain was below the average in addition to building dams in Turkey and Syria.

Iraq produces about 7500mw daily, which is less than half the demand. The low water levels in the Euphrates and Tigris rivers forced some power stations to reduce production or close.

World report issued recently warned from the drought of the two rivers on 2040 due to “climate changes, low water levels, and intensified usage of water domestically and industrially.”

The report, made by the UNICEF on the World Water Day, said “half of the water in Iraq is wasted, while six million people cannot get drinking water.”
