FIVE VIETNAMESE FISHING BOATS DETAINED

Pontianak, W Kalimantan, April 25 (ANTARA) - Indonesian fisheries authorities have caught five Vietnamese fishing boats while poaching fish in the Natuna waters.

"Of the five fishing boats, one was used to repatriate 45 crew members to their country, while four others were taken to the Pontianak port for legal process," Head of the Pontianak Marine and Fishery Resources Supervision and Control Office (P2SDKP) Bambang Nugroho said here on Sunday.

He said only skippers of the fishing boats were detained as suspects while their crew members were allowed to return home to avoid a concentration of suspected fish poachers held at the board`s detention center.

"The four skippers and their fishing boats are currently being detained at the P2SDKP port for further legal process," he said.

The Vietnamese fishing boats were caught on Tuesday (April 19) and arrived at the port under the escort of Hiu 004 and 1010 patrol boats only on Sunday, he said.

He said the Vietnamese boats were KM BV 0278 TS and BV 95163 carrying 543 kg of fish and KM BV 5288 and BV 0888 TS carrying 200 kg of fish.

Natuna is one of the three Indonesian waters susceptible to illegal fishing, and the others are Arapura and North Sulawesi waters.
