FEARING TSUNAMI, PEOPLE FLEEING TO HIGHER GROUND

Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, April 25 (ANTARA) - Fearing of a tsunami, residents of Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, fled to higher ground as several earthquakes measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale jolted the region.

Residents became more panic as some rumors on a tsunami aftershock at 10 a.m. local time and increase in sea level of Kendari beach spread.

Spokesperson of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Adi Setiadi told people not to panic because of the rumors.

"Don`t trust such tsunami rumors," Adi said here Monday.

The BMKG has no data or estimation on a potential tsunami aftershock, he said.

Some residents and workers are still outside their houses and offices and all public service facilities are paralyzed.

Previously Kendari was jolted by an earthquake and felt five times measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale at 6.07 a.m.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located 4.40 degrees Southern Latitude and 122.83 degrees Eastern Longitude, 55 km Southeast of Kendari, 120 km Northeast of baubau, 265 km Southeast of Soroako, 312 km Southeast of Singkang at the depth of 18 km.

The aftershock measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale jolted the region at 6.25. a.m.

The epicenter of the quake was located 4.11 degrees Southern Latitude and 122.61 degrees Eastern Longitude, 16 km Southeast of Kendari, 150 km Northeast of Baubau, 226 km Southeast of Soroako and 287 km Southeast of Singkang at a depth of 20 km.

According to BMKG, the aftershock has no tsunami potential.
