Ten quakes rock Kazakhstan over past 24 hours

ASTANA, May 2 (Itar-Tass) - An earthquake measuring 4.2 points on the
Richter scale was registered in Almaty, southern Kazakhstan, on Monday,
according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre.
The epicentre was located 74 kilometres northeast of the city at the
depth of 4 kilometres.
This is already the tenth quake that hit the Central Asian republic
over the past 24 hours. The first one measuring 5.4 points on the Richter
scale took place at 06:31 Moscow time on May 1. Other quakes did not
exceed 4.8 points.
According to Kazakhstan's Emergencies Ministry, no victims or
destructions have been reported so far.
Almaty with a 1.5 million population is Kazakhstan's biggest city. It
is located in a nine-point quake prone zone.
Three devastating quakes rocked the outskirts of Almaty in 1887, 1889
and 1911.
