Use Sport to Make Positive Change in Society, Urges IOC Chief

Doha, May 01 (QNA) - The Olympic Movement has an obligation to use sport as a tool to make a positive change in society and at the same time ensure that its activities do not contribute to environmental degradation, the International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge told the 9th World Conference on Sport and Environment (WSCE) here Sunday.
Delivering his keynote address during the first plenary session of the conference on the topic 'The Olympic Movement's Role in the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Agenda', Rogge said, "Our commitment to the environment is more than a matter of self-interest. It is a matter of values. The Olympic Movement exists to place sport at the service of humanity."
Highlighting the role of WSCE, the IOC President said, "This conference comes at a very opportune time. We are now just a year away from the 20th anniversary of the landmark 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Our work here will help ensure that we mark the occasion with a renewed environmental commitment and a clear agenda for action."
