FATAH: FRUIT OF RECONCILIATION WILL BE VISIBLE IN 10 DAYS

By Saleh Jadallah

GAZA STRIP, May 10 (Bernama)-- Senior Fatah leader Nabeel Sha'at said Monday that the fruit of the reconciliation pact between Fatah and Hamas, formalised on May 4 in Cairo, Egypt, would take effect in 10 days.

Members of the Fatah Central Committee said that efforts to revive the reconciliation were initiated by Egypt. The Palestinan factions did not hold negotiations before the deal, which is meant to end the four-year feud between the rival factions.

He said the three steps, which the two rival factions agreed to in Egypt, would be implemented in the next 10 days or less. This involves forming a new government, naming a temporary leadership for the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) and releasing Hamas and Fatah prisoners from both sides.

Speaking to the media in the West Bank, Sha’at also pointed out that changes in the region (the Middle East) had accelerated the reconciliation.

"Today is not like yesterday. The military conflict between Hamas and Fatah is over. Everyone is now aware of the dire consequences of the division. The divorce made us realise the benefits of marriage," he added.

Sha'at said he was not worried about whether the Palestinian Authority (PA) would be able to balance its security obligations to Israel -- by confronting Palestinian military attacks against Israel -- with its obligations to Hamas to halt security coordination with Israel.

He explained that the political agreement between Hamas and Fatah prohibited the use of violence, while permitting popular struggle.

Sha'at also spoke about the move to open the Rafah crossing to alleviate the suffering of Palestinians. He said the crossing would be opened in cooperation with the Egyptian authorities, Hamas and the PA.

"This step will alleviate their suffering because it will allow food supplies and medicines to be brought in," noted the secular leader.

Sha'at, 73, left Gaza after Hamas seized it from his rival movement in 2007.

However, he visited the Strip in 2009 -- the only leader from Fatah to do so while it was under Hamas control. He was also the Palestinian foreign minister in 2003.
