D8 agriculture ministers meeting opens in Tehran

– The second meeting of agriculture ministers of developing eight Muslim countries (D-8) kicked off in Tehran Monday morning.


The agriculture ministers of Iran, Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Turkey are attending the three-day meeting.

The meeting is aimed at expanding cooperation among member states in agriculture and food security.

Addressing the inaugural session of the meeting, D8 Secretary-General Widi Agoes Pratikto expressed hope that the body would be able to help provide welfare and food security for all world nations, particularly the member states.

He also hoped that all-out cooperation would further be strengthened among the D8 member countries.

Objectives of D8 are to improve developing countries’ positions in the world economy, create new opportunities in trade relations, enhance participation in decision-making at the international level, and provide better standards of living.

D8 is a group of eight developing countries with large Muslim populations in an alliance for economic development. The main areas of cooperation include finance, banking, rural development, science and technology, humanitarian development, agriculture, energy, environment, and health.
