UAE Government launches revamped federal portal

Abu Dhabi, May 16, 2011 (WAM) - The UAE Government has launched its revamped federal portal featuring advanced practices including Open Data and offers many eParticipation channels for the people to connect with the UAE Government ministries, authorities, officials etc.
The portal will continue to be the unified gateway to access many online services provided by the UAE Government. The new portal also reflects conformation to the updated web standards as recommended by World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) on website design, layout, content, and accessibility features amongst others.
Salem Khamis Al Shair Al Suwaidi, Director General, Emirates eGovernment said: "The aim of the advanced portal is to provide more and better online services to the people of the UAE and also involve them in the government's policies, laws, and public interest initiatives with the ultimate goal of achieving transparency." Citing the reasons for the changes to the portal, Al Suwaidi said, "We have improved the portal as per the directions of our leaders who always stress on the importance of delivering quality government services to all segments of consumers." "We did a lot of research to identify the users' needs; we conducted polls and surveys, held discussions, and considered user feedback and comments. Possible improvements were analysed against the international standards and best practices of web content. The result of all these efforts is the revamped government.ae portal," he added.
The highlights of the revamped portal are Open Data and eParticipation, through which we aim to build new bridges to reach to the people. Under Open Data, information is made available to the public for further re-use by them under no copyright restrictions. Under Open Data, people can now have access to economic data, population statistics, traffic reports etc. One of the major features of the enhanced portal is the inclusion of eParticipation channels. The UAE Government has engaged multiple platforms like forums, blogs, chats, surveys, polls and social media tools like Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and YouTube to reach to the general public and engage them in active communication with the government with regard to their opinions and experiences on government services, policies etc.
The UAE federal portal has an improved section for eServices for individuals, businesses, and visitors. It also contains a section on the offline channels for accessing government services. The portal also provides adequate information on the various services that are available through mobile devices and how to avail them with the help of specially developed short codes and mobile applications.
The website has been designed with the needs of differently abled people in mind. It offers unique accessibility options for them including a feature that enables a visually impaired user to listen to the entire contents of the portal. The portal has a very useful Help and FAQs section that can guide a first time visitor through the portal and introduce him to the features and advantages of accessing UAE Government information and services through this portal.
Through the UAE federal portal government.ae, the UAE Government aims to escalate its position in the United Nations' biennially reviewed eGovernment Readiness Index. The eGovernment Readiness Index is an indicator of the level of preparedness of a country's government to deliver services and information online and the overall value it delivers to the public.
Working in line with the strategy of the Telecommunication Regulatory Authority, the Emirates eGovernment is responsible for formulating and overseeing the implementation the eGovernment strategy on the federal level, ensuring robust shared infrastructure for federal government entities, and enhanced government services. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
