Prime Minister Gilani's official visit to China "significant"

Beijing, May 16, 2011 (PPI): Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani's four-day official visit to Pakistan's all-weather friend China starting Tuesday will be "significant".

"The visit assumes added significance in view of the ongoing developments in the region," Rong Ying, Senior Research Fellow at the state-run Chinese Institute of Strategic Studies said, indicating to US-Pakistan tensions in aftermath of bin Laden's killing by US troops in Abbottabad on May 2, 2011. "China-Pakistan relationship is important and significant from its own perspective and history," Ying stated.

High level visits by Pakistan to China are frequent considering their close strategic relations. President Asif Ali Zardari has visited China five times since he assumed office in 2008. But Gilani's visit this time is attracting more than usual attention even though it was worked out earlier.

He will hold talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao and Prime Minister Wen Jiabao, and inaugurate events organized to celebrate 60th year of establishment of diplomatic ties between two countries. He will arrive Tuesday in Shanghai and address first conference of World Cultural Forum in Suzhou.

He would later arrive in Beijing with his high powered delegation for talks with Chinese leaders. Both sides are likely to sign agreements in economy, trade, finance and culture, officials said.

China gave its full backing to Pakistan after bin Laden's killing, praising Islamabad's contribution to war against terrorism and backing demand to respect its sovereignty and territorial integrity. China also called for united global efforts to fight terrorism.
