Thai farmers want new government to reduce their costs: poll

BANGKOK, May 26 (TNA) - The Economic and Business Forecasting Centre of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) reported that Thai farmers wanted the new government to immediately solve their high costs and debt problems.

Thanavath Polvichai, director of the center, said an opinion survey on Thai farmers and their desirable policies revealed that Thai farmers wanted the new government to solve their high costs, especially fertilizer costs, and to heed goods prices and their debt problems. Of the respondents, 87.6% owed 12,300 baht per family on average.

The farmers also demanded the government implement relief measures after every natural disaster that affected their costs.

Regarding desirable agricultural policies, 25.9% of the respondents wanted the government to cut their costs, 15.3% wanted produce price insurance, and 7.5% wanted a debt moratorium and support for extra jobs. At present, over 60% of farmers have no extra job and lack revolving funds, as farming alone does not create sufficient income.

For the upcoming July 3 election, 51.9% of the respondents said they followed for news for daily developments, 65.81% paid attention to policies of political parties, while 24.8% was interested in televised debates. (TNA)
