Samsung SDI eyes 13 tln won in 2015 revenue

SEOUL, June 1 (Yonhap) -- Samsung SDI Co., a South Korean maker of hybrid car batteries, said Wednesday that it is aiming to rake in 13 trillion won (US$12.1 billion) in 2015 by focusing on its hybrid car battery and solar cell businesses.
Samsung SDI agreed last week to acquire a solar cell business from its larger affiliate Samsung Electronics Co. for 160.8 billion won ($147.6 million) in a bid to better combine the solar business with its existing energy division.
"We aim to be reborn as an environmentally friendly, energy solution company," CEO Park Sang-jin said, unveiling the company's mid- and long-term growth strategy.
Samsung SDI said it will seek to nearly triple its annual revenue to 35 trillion won in 2020 from 2015.
The company, which is known as a battery maker, also said it hopes to evolve into an energy company going forward.
Solar cell business was tapped as one of the five areas that Samsung Group, the parent group, had planned to nurture as new revenue sources for the long run. The four other areas were hybrid car batteries, light-emitting diode, biomedicine and medical equipment.
Samsung SDI plans to expand its current battery business, which largely focuses on secondary batteries for hybrid vehicles, into a "battery system," it said. The company will also offer power generation, power storage, power system and power solution in the future.
