JAKARTA URGED TO ACT AGAINST ILLEGALS

KOTA TINGGI (Johor, Malaysia), June 1 (Bernama) - Jakarta has been urged to act against
Indonesians who enter Malaysia illegally through Pengerang to avert a tragedy.

Pengerang Member of Parliament Azalina Othman Said claimed the
Indonesian government knew about such activities but did not do anything.

"I'm confident that Jakarta knows that Indonesians are entering Malaysia
illegally from Batam and other islands but did nothing about it," she told
Bernama Wednesday.

Eigthteen Indonesian illegal immigrants were reported missing after a boat
sank in Tanjung Ayam waters, Pengerang, a town in Southeast Johor, at
4:30am Wednesday.

A Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) officer here said 13 victims,
all male, had been rescued.

Azalina said Malaysia and Indonesia should check illegal activities and
called for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) like that for domestic maids.
