Kuwait expresses keenness on broadening cooperation with ASEAN
By Ahmad Al-Furaij (with photos) KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 (KUNA) -- Kuwait has expressed desire to put all possible resources at the disposal of enhancing relations and cooperation between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states and ASEAN, the Association of South East Asia Nations.
Kuwait's concern in this respect was conveyed by the ambassador to Indonesia, Nasser Bareh Al-Enezi, during a credentials' delivering meeting with the ASEAN Secretary General, Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, in the capacity as a permanent representative at the General Secretariat of the association in Jakarta.
In remarks to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), Al-Enezi said that he expressed deep gratitude to the Secretary general for his distinguished role for promoting the cooperation between the association and the Arab GCC states.
Al-Enezi relayed greetings of D eputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Dr. Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, asserting the minister's concern for boosting the cooperation between the two blocs and expressing desire to do everything possible to strengthen this relationship in various sectors.
For his part, Dr. Pitsuwan expressed deep pleasure at the official Kuwaiti gesture, for it constituted a step forward on the path of establishing distinctive partnership between the two organizations for sake of realizing progress and prosperity for the peoples of the member states.
He also wished Al-Enezi success in the service in the post, for sake of realizing common objectives, asked him to relay his greetings to His Highness the Amir, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, wished His Highness lasting good health and voiced pleasure at the successful medical checkups he has recently undergone in the UK.
ASEAN is a geo-political and economic organization of ten countries located in Southeast As ia, which was formed on August 8, 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Since then, membership has expanded to include Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. Its aims for acceleration of economic growth, social progress, cultural development among its members, protection of the peace and stability of the region, and providing opportunities for member countries to discuss differences peacefully.
