Qatar Bids for UNESCO World Heritage Committee Membership

Doha, June 14 (QNA) - The State of Qatar has submitted its candidature file for membership of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, which its election will be held during the18th session of the General Assembly of States Parties in October 2011.
   Qatar Museums Authority is launching an international campaign for Qatar's bid to win a seat in the World Heritage Committee, and has stressed that Qatar's membership in this UNESCO Committee would contribute to enhancing the quality of dialogue and cooperation among people and would strengthen the mechanisms to maintain World Heritage sites.
    HE Qatar's Ambassador to UNESCO Ali Zainal said Qatar's candidacy for World Heritage Committee membership is an ideal opportunity to support the country's cultural role at the international level. Promoting the importance and conservation of World Heritage sites are of utmost importance to the State of Qatar, he said in a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA).
The World Heritage Committee consists of representatives from 21 of the States Parties to the Convention elected by their General Assembly. The Committee is responsible for the implementation of the World Heritage Convention, defines the use of the World Heritage Fund and allocates financial assistance upon requests from States Parties. It has the final say on whether a property is inscribed on the World Heritage List.
The World Heritage Committee Member States are Australia, Bahrain, Egypt, Estonia, Ethiopia, France, Iraq, Jordan, Mali, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia, South Africa, China, Sweden, Cambodia, Brazil, Barbados, Switzerland, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates. (QNA)
