Incumbent mayor leading at Chisinau mayoral elections

CHISINAU, June 20 (Itar-Tass) -- Incumbent Chisinau Mayor from the
Liberal Party Dorin Chirtoaca is leading in the Chisinau mayoral elections
after 99.67% of votes are counted. According to the preliminary results of
the Central Elections Commission, he gained 50.51% of votes. This is about
0.1% higher than 49.49%, with which a candidate from the opposition
Communist Party Igor Dodon had been leading so far.
The situation has changed after the vote count at the polling stations
in the Chisinau suburbs. Thanks to the electorate in the Chisinau suburbs
Chirtoaca almost caught up with Dodon, who was leading in the first round
with a margin of about ten votes. The Communists claimed that the
authorities had rigged up the election results.
The winner at the Chisinau mayoral elections will be a candidate, who
will have a simple majority. If the candidates get the same percentage of
votes, a candidate, who won in the first round, will be elected mayor.
CEC Chairman Iurie Ciocan recalled that the latest results are
preliminary. He recalled that the official election results will be made
public after the CEC receives the original protocols from the district
election committees.
