Nujeifi denies demanding formation of a Sunni region

Baghdad (NINA) - Osama Al Nujeifi, Parliament Speaker, denied calling for the formation of a Sunni region in Iraq.

He said, in a press conference held today in the parliament building "I was asked in an interview on the Sunnis status in their provinces, and I said that these provinces suffer from marginalization and armed forces control and elimination of decentralization, which was approved by the constitution."

He added "I said that the attempt to impose central control on provinces increases their suffering and will not achieve prosperity in these provinces."

Nujeifi continued "I do not accept forming regions on sectarian and ethnic bases, I only diagnosed the defect in some provinces."

He confirmed that there are formal demands for the formation of regions, including an application of a number of members of the Basra Provincial Council to form a region, indicating that forming a region is a constitutional right and should be discussed in a calm atmosphere.

He said if he was asked about the rest of the Iraqi people and their suffering, he would have answered as well because he represents all the Iraqi people and not one component only.

Nujeifi said that the campaign launched against him over these comments aim at covering the achievements made during his visit to the US and demanding the return of $17.5 billion of Iraq's money.

On the other hand, Nujeifi stated that IN CASE OF failure of the political blocs to resolve their differences, the early election is the solution to this crisis.
