RI, S KOREA MARITIME INSTITUTES SCIENTIFIC TO INCREASE COOP

Jakarta, July 6 (ANTARA) - Indonesia`s Maritime and Fisheries Ministry (KKP) and South Korea`s Maritime Institute (KMI) are to step up their scientific cooperation for the benefit of both countries, an Indonesian minister said.

"The KKP and KMI will actively explore scientific cooperation opportunities in maritime and fishery research," Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Fadel Muhammad said here on Wednesday.

Fadel explained that the scientific cooperation between Indonesia and South Korea was among others through maritime and fishery researches, development of marine technology and capacity building,

development of marine resources alternative energy, and sustainable and integrated management of marine and coastal ecosystems.

Besides, Fadel said another form of the cooperation was in the fishery conservation of biological resources and the establishment of marine policy studies center, including marine and fisheries education.

According to the minister, various methods in the scientific cooperation opportunity with South Korea were through trainings, workshops, capacity building, and exchange of experts, information, and related data.

Fadel also said that to implement such a cooperation, both KKP and KMI would put forward a number of points concerning the operational steps to be discussed in more detail.

Earlier on Tuesday, July 5, 2011, Indonesia and South Korea signed a Letter of Intent (LoI), referring to a strategic partnership declaration which was signed by the tow countries in December 2006.

The LoI was signed on Tuesday by KKP Secretary General Gellwynn Jusuf and KMI President Hak So Kim before the maritime affairs and fisheries minister and South Korean Maritime and Transportation Commission Chairman Kwang Keun Chang.

As a follow-up to the LoI, KKP and KMI will conduct the first International Indonesia Korea Ocean and Fisheries Forum (IKOFF) in Jakarta later.

Noted experts and practitioners in the maritime and fisheries affairs from Indonesia and South Korea will speak on

marine and coastal conservation and sustainable development, sources of new technology, and creative activity of marine in the IKOFF.
