Hundreds of doctors from India and Pakistan apply for jobs in Ireland

Dublin, July 22, 2011 (PPI): A government committee was informed that 128 doctors from India and Pakistan have arrived in Ireland to work as junior doctors, while a further 300 had applied for visas.

The hospital with the largest number of junior doctor vacancies is the Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, which has 43 vacant posts.

There are another 191 junior doctor posts in Irish hospitals that need to be filled. A spokesperson was quoted as saying by Irish Times that the gaps are being filled by existing doctors working extra overtime.

To ensure that large hospitals can deal with complex cases referred to them, some surgeries and treatments will be transferred to smaller hospitals.

The committee was also told that the health budget was €50 million short for primary care and €58 million short for demand-led services.
