M'SIA NEEDS 60,000 ENGINEERS YEARLY      

    
     
    SEREMBAN (Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia), July 30 (Bernama) -- Malaysia needs
between 40,000 and 60,000 engineers annually to cater for economic development
and foreign companies, said International Trade and Industry Minister Mustapa
Mohamed.
    
    He said the country currently produced only 20,000 engineers yearly as
students prefer to choose courses such as law and accountancy instead of
engineering.
    
    "To offset the situation, Malaysia allows foreign investors to bring in
engineers from abroad, especially Japan, South Korea and India," he told
reporters after visiting Samsung Electronics factory in Senawang here Friday.
    
    Asked whether the problem was caused by Malaysian students abroad refusing
to return home, he said it usually involved students pursuing higher studies in
Australia.
    
    Mustapa said in South Korea, for example, foreign engineering students were
allowed to work in the country for three years before returning home.
    
    Besides facing shortage of engineers, foreign factories also had to employ
as much as 70 per cent foreign workers, he added.
