Thai DPM visiting Myanmar

BANGKOK, July 30 (TNA) - The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that Thai caretaker deputy prime minister for national economic affairs Trairong Suwannakhiri is scheduled to visit Myanmar next week to meet senior Myanmar authorities and leading business operators to discuss Thailand's expanding investment and industrial plans in the neighbouring country.

Thai caretaker foreign minister Kasit Piromya told reporters that the Thai deputy premier and his entourage are also scheduled to visit the Dawei Special Economic Zone in Myanmar.

Regarding reports that the Myanmar government has still closed a border checkpoint next to Mae Sot District in Thailand’s northwestern Tak Province to prevent Thailand from supplying provisions to its armed ethnic groups, Kasit insisted that the Thai government has paid attention to security along the common border and has no policy to support any armed forces in Myanmar or to let any group of people use the Thai soil to launch any political movement against the Myanmar regime.

In response to reports that the German government has now restored access to Germany for convicted ex-Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, the caretaker Thai foreign minister said that the German government will have to explain to the world community why it has changed its stance. (TNA)
