West arming S. Arabia to exploit regional resources: Iran's general

TEHRAN, Aug. 1 (MNA) -- The fact that Saudi Arabia is being equipped with military hardware has its roots in certain Western countries’ insatiable thirst for the exploitation of the Persian Gulf region’s extensive energy reserves, according to Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Brigadier General Masoud Jazayeri.

Jazayeri made the remarks in an interview with the Mehr News Agency published on Sunday in reference to the German government’s recent decision to permit the export of 200 Leopard 2 tanks to Saudi Arabia for a sale price of 1.8 billion euros ($2.6 billion).

The Westerners are trying to give the impression that they are the saviors of Arab countries and are promoting Iranophobia in the region to convince Arab states to purchase military equipment to counter the alleged threat posed by Iran, Jazayeri said.

He went on to say that the United States and the Zionist regime gave the green light to the deal.

“The behind-the-scenes negotiations on the sale of the Leopard 2 tanks also reinforce the analysis that they intend to use these tanks against the Islamic Republic of Iran in a U.S.-Israeli imposed war,” he stated.

In addition, the Saudis are afraid that the anti-government protests will escalate and spread across the country, and this is another reason why they decided to purchase the tanks, he added.

Jazayeri said, “The House of Saud is afraid of the outbreak of a popular and widespread revolution in Saudi Arabia and is trying to convince public opinion, independent informed politicians, and those working in the field of human rights to rule out the possibility that they will use the tanks to suppress demonstrations held by the people, who have campaigned for democracy and the freedom to determine their own destiny,” and is saying that the measure was taken to repel foreign threats.

He also stated, “Revolutionary developments in the region indicate that the advanced military equipment is a legacy which will be used by the revolutionaries in the future.”
