Baku marks International Youth Day

Baku, August 12 (AzerTAc). An event dedicated to the International Youth Day was held here at the SOS Youth House on Thursday.
The event was co-organized by the UN`s Department of Public Information (DPI), “SOS Children Villages-Azerbaijan” Association, and “Save the Children” Organization.
Addressing the ceremony, director of “SOS Children Villages-Azerbaijan” Association Gulara Humbatova said that the aim of the event is to boost cooperation among national and international organizations engaged in resolution of children and youth problems.
Representative of the UN`s DPI in Azerbaijan Envera Selimovic, representative of the UN Resident Coordinator`s Office Irada Ahmadova, deputy governor of Nizami region of Baku Gulnaz Israfilova and others congratulated youth.
The event featured demonstration of video by the UN`s DPI and “SOS Children Villages-Azerbaijan” Association.
Participants were handed over booklets on the issue.
The event brought together representatives of relevant government bodies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), UNICEF, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and other organization.
On 17 December 1999, in its resolution 54/120, the United Nations General Assembly endorsed the recommendation made by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth (Lisbon, 8-12 August 1998) that 12 August be declared International Youth Day.
This year`s International Youth Day (IYD) will represent the culmination of the International Year of Youth - designated by the United Nations to comprise the 12 month period between IYD 2010 and IYD 2011 - and the 25th Anniversary of the first International Year of Youth. As such, “Change Our World” has been chosen as the theme for IYD 2011 as it not only expresses the level of impact that young people strive to achieve, but also reflects the notion of a global community that is a core principle of the United Nations.
