Manufacturing has bright future: Shorten

Australia has not given up on the ailing manufacturing industry, Assistant Treasurer Bill Shorten says.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard was meeting with unions and industry groups on Monday following an announcement from Australia's biggest steel manufacturer BlueScope last week that it would axe 1000 jobs.
Assistant Treasurer Bill Shorten says Australia's manufacturing industry has a bright future.
"There is no question that the announcements of BlueScope were a severe knock to people working at the Western Port steel mill and also in Port Kembla," he told reporters in Melbourne.
"But let's not be party to a story which says Australia has given up on manufacturing.
"We certainly believe that we can keep manufacturing jobs in Australia."
