Private Matthew Lambert returns home


The body of Private Matthew Lambert, killed in Afghanistan last week, has arrived back in Australia.
Led by a lone piper, soldiers from his unit, the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment (2RAR), carried his flag-covered casket rom a RAAF C-17 transport aircraft at RAAF base Amberley, Queensland, on Monday.
Army chief Lieutenant General David Morrison paid his respects as Pte Lambert was carried past an honour guard to his waiting family, including his partner Ellesse, mother Vicki and her partner Gregg, father Chris and his wife Amanda and his sister Jess.
"As we gather here to mark the return of this fine young Australian soldier, we remember the courage, initiative and mateship that Private Matthew Lambert displayed to all whom he met," Lt Gen Morrison said.
"Private Lambert's ultimate sacrifice to this country will be felt by his family, friends and his Army family, and we will remember him as a true Australian soldier."
Lt Gen Morrison presented Pte Lambert with medals earned during his time in Afghanistan - the Australian Active Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, NATO Medal and Infantry Combat Badge.
He will be be laid to rest in a private ceremony later in the week.
Pte Lambert was killed in the explosion of an insurgent improvised explosive device on August 22. He was the 30th Australian soldier to die in Afghanistan.
